Google Home review
Google Home is a voice activated speaker or appliance that is supposed to perform tasks like playing music, activating lights and communicating with Google Assistant to answer questions and perform tasks. The Google Home app is the primary way to configure and control the device.
I was a bit skeptical about Google Assistant because I was previously using Amazon Alexa. Amazon Alexa is a very good speaker but has its limitations and it is not as natural to talk to. Also, Google Assistant has a much larger knowledge base than Alexa.
Google Home app is an integral part of the Google Assistant experience. It is your window for both controlling and setting up your Google Home devices. You need to use this app to configure and manage your Google Home devices.
This app is also used to set up Google Chromecast and Android TV. I find that it is a stable app with frequent updates for bug fixes.
The design of the application is quite simple and intuitive. The main elements of the app design are the elements of the device itself and the Google Assistant, who is represented as a round circular animated character.
The application uses the primary colors of the Google brand: blue and white. It is a combination of the elements of a web-based interface and a mobile application interface (for Android and iOS). The app is available for iOS and Android devices, so you can easily control the device from your smartphone.
Key Functions 5/5
The app allows you to do the following things:
- Control multiple smart home devices.
- Groups your devices into rooms.
- Create a room in your home and assign smart devices to it.
- Manage every smart device in the room.
- Control your smart home devices even when you are away from home (requires internet connection).
It also includes the ability to create routines, which allows user to configure a set of actions to be executed together. For example, a routine could be setup to turn on the lights in the living room, turn on the TV and start playing a movie.
Ease of Use 4/5
Most of the device specific information and controls are available by tapping on the device icon in the top right corner. Tap on a device icon to access a menu that includes device specific controls, a list of devices under the same account, and other information about the device. It is even possible to change the name of a device from the device list.
Google Home app is a single place for managing and controlling all the devices. If someone has multiple Google Homes, Google Chromecasts, or other Google Assistant enabled devices, Google Home app is the single place to setup and control them. It is also possible to control the devices from the Google Assistant interface.
